Peer Support Worker Training Program
At Thrive, we understand that everyone comes from diverse backgrounds and experiences. That's why we offer two distinct pathways within our Peer Support Worker Training Program, tailored to meet the needs of both trained professionals seeking work experience and individuals eager to kickstart their careers.
This cohort is ideal for those with little to no experience but have a strong interest in working in the social service field. Through the peer support worker training, you will:
- Participate in a twelve (12) week training program t followed by 10-12 weeks Work Experience to become certified Peer Support Worker.
- Engage in interactive learning sessions facilitated by Thrive staff and a peer
- Receive ongoing support from Customized Employment Specialists and Recreation Therapists at Thrive.
- Access a range of training opportunities, including NVCI, MHFA, First Aid, and more.
Join our Peer Support Worker Training if you are:
- 18 years or older
- A resident of the Vancouver Coastal Health service delivery area.
- Have lived experience with mental health and/or substance use challenges (or both).
- Have at least 6 months of wellness. If you have faced challenges related to substance dependence in the past, participants should have a reasonable period of wellness before joining the program and moving forward. We recognize that recovery is a deeply personal journey, and we are committed to understanding your unique circumstances.
- Be able to provide one (1) letter of support. It must be from your GP or psychiatrist, psychologist, OT, elder, counsellor, mental health team member, social worker, community support worker, volunteer coordinator etc. (more details can be found in the application form)

2. Peer Support Worker Work Experience Placement
This cohort is ideal for those with some level of Peer Support Worker training but limited work experience. Through the work experience placement, you will:
- Enhance your skills through a 10-12 week Work Experience placement.
- Receive ongoing support from Customized Employment Specialists and Recreation Therapists at Thrive.
- Enjoy flexible hours (6-10 per week).
- Access a range of training opportunities, including NVCI, MHFA, First Aid, and more.
- Make a meaningful impact while building your resume and honing your skills.
Join the Peer Support Worker Work Experience Placement if you are:
- 18 years or older.
- A resident of the Vancouver Coastal Health service delivery area.
- Have lived experience with mental health and/or substance use challenges (or both).
- Have at least 6 months of wellness. If you have faced challenges related to substance dependence in the past, we ask that participants have a reasonable period of wellness before joining the program and moving forward. We recognize that recovery is a deeply personal journey, and we are committed to understanding your unique circumstances.

- Have some level of peer support worker training, a good understanding of one’s own recovery and how to maintain wellness, great interpersonal skills, and enjoy supporting others.
