Voices of Strength: Stories That Inspire
March 21, 2025
Spotlights

Women and gender-diverse people have always been at the heart of our communities- lifting others up, making a difference, and leading with courage and compassion. Whether at work, at home, or in the community, their contributions shape the world around us and inspire positive change every day.
This March, Women’s History Month, Open Door Group is celebrating Voices of Strength to recognize and appreciate the incredible impact of women and gender-diverse individuals within our organization and beyond. Their stories remind us of the power of resilience, determination, and unwavering spirit in building a brighter future for everyone.
To honour their journeys, we asked team members to share their stories by reflecting on two key questions:
1. What are you most proud of in your career?
2. What advice would you give to your younger self?
By sharing these stories, we are celebrating the strength and contributions of women and gender-diverse people- showcasing the everyday impact they make in the workplace, in their communities, and in the lives of those around them. Join us in uplifting their voices and celebrating their journeys below:
What are you most proud of in your career: I’m most proud of how I’ve adapted and evolved through every career transition, especially after my MS diagnosis. Shifting from graphic design to opticianry and then into employment services, I discovered my true passion - helping people. Each change challenged me to grow, teaching me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of meaningful work. Now, I get to support individuals facing their own barriers, helping them find opportunities that fit their strengths. My journey has shown me that even unexpected changes can lead to fulfilling and impactful work, and I’m grateful for the path that brought me here.
What advice would you give to your younger self: Trust yourself and embrace change. It will lead you to places you never expected but exactly where you need to be. Don’t be afraid to pivot when something no longer serves you; each transition will bring valuable lessons. Prioritize your well-being, set boundaries, and know that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. Challenges will shape you but won’t define you.
Keep believing in your ability to adapt and grow, and remember that the most fulfilling path is the one you create for yourself, even if it looks different than you imagined.
What are you most proud of in your career: I am most proud of the risks I've taken in my career in my quest to find meaningful work. When I was younger, I had a very comfortable, well-paid occupation with incredible job security. However, I was no longer thriving, so I left it behind and moved to BC. This was the most challenging decision of my life, and it wasn't without hardship along the way. 17 years and many jobs later, I have no regrets as this journey's led me to the most meaningful role of my career.
What advice would you give to your younger self: I have so much advice for that young woman but, if I had to choose, I would tell her that her worth is not dependent on validation from others or external achievements. I'd remind her that her worth is a given, and not up for debate.
My hope is this advice would allow her to be bold and fearless as she faces what life will bring.
What are you most proud of in your career: I am proud to have a career as an Administrative Assistant and to work for an outstanding organization. My role gives me a sense of purpose and meaning, aligning with my values and allowing me to contribute my skills and experience to make a positive difference for others.
What advice would you give your younger self: I would advise myself to practice better self-care, aim for more balance in my life, procrastinate less and stand up for myself more; have healthy habits and boundaries.
Believe in myself and not let others dictate my capabilities or life direction; and focus my time and energy on positive things (and people).
What are you most proud of in your career: I am honored by my commitment to advancing social equity through transformative change that empowers individuals and groups to drive their own growth. With a global mindset and local action, I challenge the status quo and advocate for inclusive policies. Through advocacy, mentorship, and collaboration, I’ve learned to adapt to change, embracing diverse perspectives and innovative solutions. Every step toward equity, no matter how small, creates ripples that lead to lasting impact.
What advice would you give to your younger self: Try not to let roadblocks, barriers, or the adversities in the world discourage you. Remember, there are always incredible individuals and groups creating significant positive change, and their work should propel you forward. If you ever feel disheartened by your pace in life, know that there is no universal blueprint for success. Everyone is navigating their journey as they go.
Life may be overwhelming at times, so prioritize protecting your heart, body, and mind. These are your foundation, and they will be your greatest strength during challenging moments.
What are you most proud of in your career: I am most proud of the impact that I have had in advocating for inclusion, accessibility, and belonging. My career has been driven by the belief that everyone deserves to be seen and valued. Working for Open Door Group gives me the opportunity to help break down barriers and ensure that everyone has a chance to succeed.
What advice would you give to your younger self: To my younger self, I would say to trust your instincts - the path ahead isn't always going to be smooth, and the challenges that you face will shape you in ways you can't imagine.
Keep being curious, continue leading with compassion, and don't underestimate yourself - you are capable of big and beautiful things.
